SMART DISTRIBUTION MANAGEMENT
New Technologies to Find Small Leaks & Minimize New Ones (MWWA Course ID#: MWWA 21-006)The catastrophic water main breaks make the evening news, but it is the many small leaks that typically accounts for the majority of real water loss for most water utilities. John Brutz, the General Manager of 540 Technologies, will explain how leak-run time impacts the amount of water and revenue that is lost in the accumulation of many small leaks. Mr. Brutz will also discuss the benefits of creating District Metered Areas (DMAs). DMAs are highly successful in finding small leaks and preventing future leaks. DMAs incorporate the following components: insertion of electromagnetic metering to monitor minimum night flows and trends, utilization of acoustic logging devices to monitor nightly and remotely pinpoint leak locations, monitoring system pressure with PRV modulation for pressure reduction and pressure transient monitoring to minimize and mitigate surges and water hammer.
Learning Objectives: •• Review the impact that many small water leaks have on loss water and loss revenue;•• Learn about the value of creating District Metered Areas (DMAs); •• Discuss the new technologies available to monitor DMAs to find leaks as well as improved operation to prevent future leaks. This course is approved for 2 TCHs (Training Contact Hours) for Massachusetts and Rhode Island Water Operators. It will be taught using the Zoom platform. Participants will need to have a reliable highspeed internet connection and computer device with both video and audio capability.
