An Overview of Temporary Traffic Control and Safety for Water & Wastewater Workers

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health reports that there are roughly 20,000 workers injured each year in construction site traffic incidents.

Join instructor, Catherine Schoenenberger of Stay Safe Traffic Products for a ½ day overview of what is meant by “Temporary Traffic Controls” for roadway utility projects.   The session will review the “Bible” of traffic control:  Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) which has been adopted by the Mass. Dept. of Transportation (MADOT).  Ms. Schoenenberger will introduce attendees to the important terminology and components of a temporary traffic control area and demonstrate proper use of a variety of common types of equipment.  Examples of common water and wastewater work will be presented along with a discussion of the best traffic safety implementation strategies.

This course is approved for 3.0 TCH (Training Contact Hours) for both  MA Water and Wastewater Operators.

Learning Objectives:

  • Review the “Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices” (MUTCD) that has been adopted by MassDOT.
  • Select appropriate traffic control equipment
  • Understand how to properly use traffic control equipment
  • Discuss common traffic control issues encountered on water & wastewater projects
