Summer Expo Technical Session

..........................................................

Despite the cancellation of MWWA’s annual Summer Exposition & Clambake we are pleased to still be able to offer the following training opportunity via the Zoom teaching platform.

GIS – Tools and Tips for Utilities

(MWWA Course: MWWA 20-005, MA Wastewater: BC-2020-3552)

It is estimated that 80 to 90 percent of a utility’s data is somehow tied to a geographic location. The trend is to move this information from a paper format to a computerized format.  But the advantages to a computerized Geographic Information System (GIS) go beyond just mapping.  Tracking real time information such as water main breaks, water sampling data, pressure and flow information, customer complaints and even hydraulic modeling are now part of most GIS systems. This 2- hour class will provide an overview of GIS, examples of its capabilities, and the work needed by both field staff and office staff to make it all work.

Learning Objectives:

  • To learn what GIS is, its capabilities and ways it can benefit a utility
  • To understand how field and office personnel work together and benefit from GIS
  • To review examples of how GIS is being used in MA utilities

This course is approved for 2.0 TCHs (Training Contact Hours) for both Massachusetts water and wastewater operators as well as RI Drinking Water Operators. It will be taught using the Zoom platform.  Participates will need to have a reliable highspeed internet connection and  computer device with both video and audio capability.
