Understanding & Testing Backflow Device Assemblies

(MWWA Course ID#: MWWA 21-008)

Testing a backflow prevention device assembly is not just connecting hoses and noting the results. Understanding how a backflow prevention device assembly is designed to prevent backflow is just as important as the results obtained from the test. The hydraulics in the piping system both upstream and downstream of the backflow prevention device assembly must be evaluated in order understand the significance of the test results. What is the purpose of testing a backflow prevention device assembly? Is the backflow prevention device assembly meeting the standards? Is it providing protection? What is the significance of pass or fail? Does the downstream shut-off valve have to be drip-tight to perform the test? Can you test a backflow prevention device assembly with backpressure present? These topics will be discuses in this half day class.

Learning Objectives:

•• Review the proper installation and operation of backflow prevention devices assembly devices;
•• Learn how to evaluate upstream and downstream hydraulics;
•• Discuss the common problems encountered when performing device testing.

This course is approved for 2 TCHs (Training Contact Hours) for Massachusetts and Rhode Island Water Operators. It will be taught using the Zoom platform. Participants will need to have a reliable highspeed internet connection and computer device with both video and audio capability.
